DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT

Barcode, OCR, IDR

Barcode

Bar code recognition software is used to read a barcode for each document. The barcode is then associated with the document and indexing is taken automatically from the barcode. This eliminates the manual process.

OCR/IDR

OCR/IDR software is used to look for a specific word(s) that will automatically extract the index data. The extracted data provides application pointers to the image that it refers to. The word(s) can then be used to search for specific pages within a document.

Data Capture Terms and Acronyms

Confused by all the terms, let us help to keep it simple.

Barcode

Barcode

A Barcode is machine-readable representation of data. Barcodes originally represented data in the widths and the spacing of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or 1 dimensional barcodes. They have evolved over time and can now be represented as patterns of squares, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns within images termed 2D (2 dimensional) matrix codes. SWM Document Management have scanners and software capable of reading bar-coded information at a very high level of accuracy.

OCR - Optical Character Recognition

Barcode

Optical character recognition, usually abbreviated to OCR, is the process of translating scanned images of handwritten, typewritten or printed text into machine-encoded (computer understandable) text. This technology is used to convert books and documents into electronic files. OCR makes it possible to edit the text, and search for a word or phrase.

The term Intelligent Character Recognition, usually abbreviated to ICR, can sometimes be used in relation to the OCR process - capturing text from scanned images.

OMR - Optical Mark Recognition

Barcode

Optical Mark Recognition, usually abbreviated to OMR, is the process of capturing human-marked data from documents such as survey forms and test marking sheets. OMR is generally different from OCR because a complicated pattern recognition engine is not required.
